Work to return Anzac Day services to Anzac Park in 2025 is set to continue with leveling now underway at the site.
Bundaberg Regional Council has begun the civil works that will lay the foundation for potential future stages.
A row of palm trees that line the front of the parcel of land will be maintained as part of the redevelopment plans after community consultation highlighted their significance.
Originally, the plan included cutting down each of the palms, although following
feedback, some will now remain in place.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said it was fantastic Council had been able to work with residents to save the palm trees while the project forged ahead.
“While it’s always difficult to remove trees, especially in a place as special as Anzac Park, our priority is to create a safe, beautiful, and fitting environment for future Anzac Day services,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“Moving forward, we have readjusted the design to be able to maintain as many trees as the project allows.
“We are committed to preserving the character of Anzac Park, and as part of this project, new landscaping will include more greenery to ensure the park remains a place of reflection and remembrance for generations to come.”
The works are part of Bundaberg Regional Council’s scaled-down plans for Anzac
Park on Quay Street.
The staged approach ensures memorial services will return to this significant location as soon as possible while ensuring Council spending on new projects is within the means of ratepayers.
