Australia’s leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performing arts company, Bangarra Dance Theatre, is set to enchant young audiences at the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre this month with their award-winning children’s production, Waru: Journey of the Small Turtle.

Designed for children aged three and above, the performance has been celebrated across Australia and was the winner of the Sydney Theatre Awards’ ‘Best Production for Children’ in 2023.

Waru tells the inspiring story of Migi, a small green turtle navigating her way back to the beach where she was born under the star-lit skies of the Torres Strait.

Created by Bangarra’s former artistic director and multi-award-winning choreographer Stephen Page, alongside Hunter Page-Lochard and Bangarra alumni dancers and choreographers Sani Townson and Elma Kris, Waru is a testament to the power of storytelling through dance and the arts.

Director of Waru, Stephen Page said he is excited to give young audiences a glimpse into the lives of the Torres Strait people and their stories.

Waru is about celebrating the connection of Torres Strait Islander people to sea, land, and sky.” He said.

“Even though it’s a children’s show, it carries very old stories of the green turtle’s life cycle that will connect to all people today.”

The production is an engaging journey of survival and discovery, captivating the imaginations of young audiences and opening up important conversations about climate change, environmental stewardship and traditional cultural values.
