Beach report: winds ease in time for weekend

Beach report
In this week’s beach report, Craig Holden says the recent strong winds have eased with a fantastic few days of beach weather ahead.

Well, it has been another mixed week of weather, with a brief but strong wind change arriving on Tuesday.

However it did thankfully drop out quite quickly through Wednesday and into yesterday but it did bring a bit of a dip in temperature that was certainly a relief from the recent warm spell.

Looking ahead though to today and then across the weekend, it appears we are once again set to experience another fantastic few days of weather, with light winds set to return, along with mild temperatures.

Today’s winds will be from the E to E/NE at around 10 to 15 knots, before tomorrow brings even lighter winds as we can expect 5 to 10 knots of E to E/NE winds.

Sunday will then bring variable winds at only 5 to 10 knots as well.

Swimming

This past week has generally been pretty good for swimmers with mostly reasonable swimming conditions across all local beaches – the only exception being for about 24 hours or so from Tuesday mid-morning until about Wednesday afternoon when those super-strong SE winds ripped into gear and brought very choppy conditions with them.

But thankfully the winds have eased and the ocean conditions have improved quickly – and in even better news for beach goers, they will improve even more across the weekend too!

Light E/NE winds will be the norm over the coming days, with variable but light winds then expect for Sunday, so swimming conditions are expected to be fantastic across the weekend.

The best beaches will likely be Kelly’s Beach and Elliott Heads but all beaches should be OK through the mornings.

Hit the beach from mid-morning and through until about midday to early-afternoon to grab the best conditions.

Please check with the lifeguard on duty, read any safety signage or messages, and most importantly please swim only at patrolled beaches, only between the red and yellow flags, and only during patrol times – remember, if we can’t see you, we can’t save you!

Beach patrols

Weekdays: 9 am to 5 pm at Agnes Water only

Saturday and Sunday: 9 am to 5 pm at Kelly’s Beach and Agnes Water only

Surfing

This past week has been a little all over the place in terms of waves, but as we look ahead to today and then across the weekend, we can probably expect a small increase in wave heights, which should be pleasing for local board-riders.

The wave heights will not be huge, but there should be plenty of small, fun-sized waves about to enjoy – and more so through the morning on that incoming tide.

Check out Kelly’s Beach and Elliott Heads for cleaner conditions, or else Nielson Park or Agnes Water before the NE winds kick-in.

For the SUP and ocean ski paddlers chasing a downwind paddle, the wind forecast is not looking great but maybe try a north to south run through the afternoons.

For those chasing a more gentle and mild ocean paddle, head to Kelly’s Beach and Elliott Heads through the early mornings where you may even find a small, clean wave as well.

Events

The Lifesaving World Championships 2024 continue through today, and across the weekend, wrapping up on Sunday on the Gold Coast.

Good Luck to our local competitors!
