The main street in Childers will soon transform into a vibrant celebration of literacy with a splash of Hollywood as the annual Read to Me Day approaches.

This year’s theme Memorable Movie Moments promises to bring an extra dose of excitement with community members dressing up as beloved characters from popular films to engage local students in the joys of reading.

Read to Me Day Childers chairperson Judy Robertshaw said the event was now in its nineth year and had been aimed to create a love of reading among the town’s youngest residents.

“Kids just love seeing the adults dressed up,” Judy said.

“It brings an element of fun while helping young people relax around the idea of reading.

“It’s also a bonding event which builds relationships between the high school students who take part and read to younger primary school students.

“Even passersby see reading can be fun!”

Judy said she was proud the initiative was set to mark its tenth years next year as it continued to highlight the importance of supporting literacy from a young age.

She said Bundaberg Regional Council supported the annual event with Childers Neighbourhood Centre and Childers Library also taking part.

“Council’s support for this event is invaluable,” Judy said.

“It’s an all-round community event and it’s important the community feel like they own it!

“We’ll have more than 10 designated reading stations set up and we look forward to seeing some of our Councillors coming along dressed in theme to read to the kids!”

Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn said Read to Me Day was a wonderful event and she looked forward to sharing stories with the young community members.

“Read to Me Day will be more than just a day of fun and costumes; it will be an investment in our children’s futures,” she said.

“Reading is the foundation of learning and by making it engaging and entertaining we will help nurture a lifelong love of books.

“When children see their community coming together in support of literacy it will inspire them to value and enjoy reading themselves.”

Childers Read to Me Day will take place on from 10 am on Wednesday 4 September and is supported by Bundaberg Regional Council, Isis Child and Family Program, Childers Library, Isis District High School, and Queensland Government.
