More than 800 people rely on the Bundaberg and District Meals on Wheels service and this week local volunteers had an extra helper to ensure deliveries were made on time.

Mayor Helen Blackburn joined in on the action for National Meals on Wheels Day earlier this week, dropping off deliveries to the communities most vulnerable while promoting the service and the vital role volunteers play.

“The importance of this service isn’t just about the delivery of nutritious meals, it is also to ensure people are not left in isolation and have the opportunity to meet with others,” she said.

“Our wonderful local volunteers are out and about each day saying hello to people in the community while providing something healthy to eat.”

National Meals on Wheels Day honours the efforts of the volunteers and staff who deliver nutritious meals to the elderly, disabled, and those who are unable to prepare meals for themselves.

It highlights the important role Meals on Wheels plays in supporting the independence and well-being of these individuals, allowing them to continue living in their homes while receiving the nutrition they need.

Gail Zunker, Secretary of the Bundaberg Meals on Wheels committee, said she loved being part of an organisation that helped those who needed it most.

She said joining the Bundaberg and District Meals on Wheels team had also given her purpose again after retirement.

“I was fulltime employed for a very long time and then when I retired there was this sense that I really had nothing to do,” she said.

“I just find Meals on Wheels a really necessary service.

“It is good value, nutritious and meals can be done up as per your diet.”

With 800 clients, Gail said there were plenty of mouths to feed and more volunteers were always welcome.

“We do run on volunteers, without them we couldn’t exist,” she said.

“Most of our clients are in the 80-year age range and most of our volunteers are in their 70s.

“It would be really lovely to have some younger people join us!”

Bundaberg and District Meals on Wheels cook fresh meals from 5 am each day with meals delivered from Meals delivered Monday to Friday.
