Accolades flow with water industry awards

Water Industry Operations Association of Australia (WIOA) annual conference.
Bundaberg Regional Council Water Services employees Luke Reid and Joshua Van Hout were recently recognised with state awards for their work within the water industry.

It was double the celebration recently when two of Bundaberg Regional Council’s Water Services employees were recognised with state awards for their work within the water industry.

Treatment Process Officer Joshua Van Hout and Plumber/Drainer Luke Reid received the awards at the Water Industry Operations Association of Australia (WIOA) annual conference.

The awards are presented to operators of water or wastewater treatment facilities to recognise excellent performance, initiative and all-round attention to detail.

For Joshua, receiving the 2024 WIOA Operator of the Year award was truly a humbling and inspiring moment.

He was recognised for his dedication as a teacher and mentor to the Water Services operations team and was described as a huge asset to the water sector.

“To be acknowledged not just by my peers and Council, but also by industry experts, is a testament to the dedication and hard work that I’ve poured into my career,” Joshua said.

“Important factors I consider when teaching and mentoring members of the team is understanding everyone’s background, knowing their strengths and leveraging those.

“I like to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments and efforts of operators to boost morale and motivation which can inspire them to
grow professionally.”

Awarded 2024 WIOA Young Operator of the Year, Luke was acknowledged for his impressive and rigorous work ethic and commitment to safety.

This was evidenced by numerous actions in the Water Services work management system which were accompanied by comprehensive notes and documentation and commendations from colleagues on his safe working practices.

Luke said receiving the award was an honour.

“While I don’t seek recognition for my efforts, it is incredibly rewarding to know that my contributions are valued,” he said.

“The award not only reflects my personal success, it’s also a reflection on my superiors and workmates who’ve supported me over the past two years.”

Luke said safety was a top priority to ensure everyone went home injury free and his strong work ethic was driven by a sense of pride in his work, along with a positive attitude when needing to overcome challenges.

As well as a trophy and title, Luke and Joshua received an all-expenses paid opportunity to join the WIOA delegation to New Zealand, which they said was an honour and exciting prospect.

Luke said since completing his Water Industry Worker Certificate earlier this year, his enthusiasm for water and wastewater had grown.

“I’m eager to connect with likeminded people, expand my knowledge and experience first-hand the innovative practices in the field.”
