Beach report: messy surf conditions ahead

Beach report scattered showers
According to the beach report, there will be a little bit of messy action for surfers.

Well, it has been a rather mild week in terms of temperatures during this past week, but the weather has been a little mixed with some overcast skies and even a few sprinkles of rain here and there, but the wind has remained mostly light up until yesterday when the SE winds returned at moderate strength.

Looking ahead to the coming days and the forecast suggests we are in for a continuation of mild temperatures and partly cloudy/overcast skies, with moderate S/SE to E/SE winds to persist.

The chances of showers will increase from Sunday too, with even the chance of possible rain periods on Monday.

This morning’s winds will be from the S at around 10 knots before they swing more from the S/SE to E/SE during the day at 10 to 15 knots.

Tomorrow will be almost identical with S/SE to E/SE winds at 10 to 15+ knots, before Sunday will see the winds become a little stronger with S/SE to E/SE winds at 15+ knots.

Swimming

This past week has brought us reasonable swimming conditions for those brave enough to hit the cool water, with just some onshore chop developing through yesterday as those S/SE winds returned and started to increase.

As we look ahead to today and then across the weekend, the slightly choppy conditions will continue as the S/SE to E/SE winds continue and get slightly stronger as well – the open and exposed beaches will be choppier, and more so through the afternoons too, so look for protected locations from about late morning onwards.

The best time for a swim will either be through the early mornings while the winds are lighter, or again an hour or two either side of midday while the tide is high.

The best locations are likely to be Hervey Bay, Agnes Water, Nielson Park, and Moore Park Beach.

Please check with the Lifeguard on duty, read any safety signage or messages, AND most importantly please swim only at patrolled beaches, only between the red and yellow flags, and only during patrol times – remember, if we can’t see you, we can’t save you!

BEACH PATROLS: Weekdays – 9 am to 5 pm at Agnes Water only

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY – 9 am to 5 pm at Kelly’s Beach and Agnes Water only

Surfing

This past week has not produced a great deal in terms of great waves or quality waves, but there were a few small, clean, fun waves about through the early part of the week for those keen to get the long board out for some fun.

The moderate onshore winds forecast for the coming days will not likely produce great surfing conditions either, but there should at least be something there to entice the diehards out for a grovel even though it is likely to be choppy and a little messy.

Try Agnes Water, Nielson Park, Mon Repos or Moore Park for a wave, with early morning through until late morning being the better time.

For the SUP and Ocean Ski paddlers chasing a downwind paddle, there should be enough wind for south to north downwind runs through the afternoons.

However, for those looking for a more relaxed and gentler paddle, try the beaches through the very early mornings, but more likely the better option will be to head to the protected inland waterways.
