Patients and visitors can now enjoy improved parking at Childers Multipurpose Health Service with the official opening of the newly completed car park.
The $900,000 project has delivered 25 additional parking spaces, providing much-needed enhancements to the area.
The new car park, situated on the land directly in front of the MPHS between the existing parking spaces and Broadhurst Street, has significantly enhanced accessibility and connectivity to the hospital.
Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS) Chief Executive Debbie Carroll said she was thrilled to see the project’s completion.
“Our patients, staff and Community Reference Group (CRG) at Childers have been advocating for better parking facilities for several years, so it’s wonderful to see this project come to fruition,” she said.
“The improvements also include new pedestrian footpaths, ramps and handrails, ensuring easier and safer access to the main hospital building.
“Additionally, new lighting and signage have been installed to enhance visibility when accessing the hospital.
“These enhancements are particularly beneficial for individuals with disabilities or mobility challenges and parents with prams.”
The new car parking spaces, including an EV car charger, are now fully operational.
Childers CRG Chair Bill Trevor said before the project, parking had been an issue for some time.
“As a CRG we felt it was unsafe as people would park on the street outside the hospital not realising it was a main road,” he said.
“People would open doors to get out of the car and not be expecting heavy traffic or large trucks to come up behind them.”
Mr Trevor said a highlight of the project had been the community satisfaction.
“I have heard nothing but very generous comments from residents since the car park has been open.”
