Aged care residents celebrate Friendship Day

In honour of International Friendship Day, residents from the TriCare Bundaberg Aged Care Facility are this week proving just how beneficial social connections are in later life.

Manager Sherolee Ruff has witnessed many strong friendships blossom between residents during her time.

“TriCare Bundaberg has a lovely outdoor setting at the front entrance which has become a regular meeting area for many residents to sit and catch up,” she said.

“Many friendships are also formed during our social activities such as playing board games or arts and crafts as they tend to bring people together with similar interests.

“We have noticed that residents who would tend not to leave their rooms have started to attend activities to be with the residents they have formed friendships with.

“This helps ensure that these residents don’t become socially isolated and embrace the many benefits of aged care living.”

Researchers have found having strong and secure relationships not only increases people’s happiness, but also their longevity by roughly 50%.

Bundaberg local Maureen Gerrard, aged 86, moved into the TriCare facility three months ago and is delighted to have already formed friendships.

“I had a wonderful roommate when I first moved into the facility which made the transition a lot easier,” she said.

“I have since made friends through the many social activities available, regular outings, and during mealtimes.

“The friendships strengthen you; they take away the loneliness and negative thoughts.

“Having friends with similar interests encourages you to get out of your comfort zone and try new things.

“Although I’m a people person, I wouldn’t usually attend social activities on my own. However, since making friends, I’m more confident to give things a try and learn new hobbies.”

Fellow resident Roy Witcher said living among his friends boosted his everyday morale, noting there’s nothing better than seeing friendly faces line the hallways.

“I never feel alone here, there’s always someone to chat to and spend time with,” Roy said.

“I often go for walks throughout the facility and stop by those I’ve become very close with to have a chat – it’s one of the highlights of my day and makes me a lot happier.

“Living in aged care has proven you’re never too old to make new friendships. It’s very easy to connect with people with similar interests and past experiences – I encourage new residents to take the time to get to know those around you because you never know who you will meet.”

International Friendship Day is celebrated each year on June 30.
