Bundaberg Regional Council is continuing its fight against waste with the opening of the Tirroan Waste Transfer Station.
Originally a landfill, the facility in Daylsford has undergone significant changes to become a transfer station as part of Bundaberg Council’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2023-2030.
The strategy aims to close old landfills and have all waste eventually transferred to the Bundaberg Regional Landfill site.
Water, Waste and Renewable Economy portfolio spokesperson Cr Gary Kirk said the $1.5 million project would offer many benefits, including a reduction in operational costs and improved customer experience.
“The Tirroan Waste Facility was approaching its end of life and if it was to be expanded, it would need to have a landfill liner to reduce leachate entering ground water,” he said.
“Under state legislation, it would also require a weighbridge which would incur significant operational and capital costs.
“Adapting to a transfer station allows us to continue servicing regional areas effectively.”
Cr Kirk said the upgrades would also result in an increase in recycling through the
separation of waste prior to it reaching landfill.
“Increased separation of waste means more materials can be recycled, reducing our environmental impact,” he said.
“We currently pay $94 per tonne of landfill to the State Government, so a reduction in landfill has positive financial implications as well.”
As part of the revitalisation of the facility, works conducted included a roof structure over the bin transfer area and a new gatehouse with larger, modern amenities.
Asphalt has been laid in the main traffic area to minimise the amount of dust from vehicle movement.
CCTV cameras have also been installed to pick up vehicle registration, view loads received, and monitor the areas customers will discard their waste.
The Tirroan Waste Transfer Station will officially open on Wednesday 17 July.
This project is funded by the Queensland Government’s 2022-24 Local Government Levy Ready Grant Program in association with Bundaberg Regional Council.
