Bundaberg Regional Council is inviting community feedback on a Changing Places facility which would provide enhanced amenities for people with complex disabilities and their carers.

A Changing Places facility is larger than standard accessible toilets and includes additional features such as;

  • a height-adjustable adult-sized change table
  • a constant charging ceiling track hoist system
  • a centrally located peninsular toilet
  • more circulation space
  • a securable automatic door with a clear opening of at least 950mm
  • a privacy screen

To ensure any future facility meets the needs of the community and is placed in a suitable location, Council is seeking input through an online community survey.

Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Jason Bartels encouraged residents to have their say.

“The survey, open until Sunday 14 July, invites responses from individuals with disabilities or their carers to gather insights on what surrounding amenities should be considered while also understanding transport requirements and wayfinding signage,” he said.

“This feedback will help the Council determine the most beneficial location for installation as budget allows.”

Cr Bartels highlighted the importance of community involvement during the planning phase.

“We understand that people living with high care needs require more specialised amenities then what a standard accessible bathroom can provide.

“A Changing Places facility would support users by reducing barriers to fully enjoy and engage with their community.

“We encourage all residents who would use a Changing Places facility, or care for someone who would, to participate in the survey – your input will guide us in creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all.”

The survey can be accessed online here, and paper copies of the survey are available by contacting the Council at 1300 883 600 or by emailing parksadministration@bundaberg.qld.gov.au

Additionally, residents are welcome to book an appointment with the Bundaberg Regional Council Parks team for a private consultation or to ask further questions.

The survey period begins in June and concludes on Sunday, 14 July 2024.

  1. It is great we are supporting our disability clients but we also need to be supporting our palliative clients who have nil family and end up dying in one of our hospitals rather than a dedicated hospice! The closest palliative hospice is Hervey Bay which is not adequate for those that wish to remain in the Bundaberg region.
