Apple Tree Creek Community Park, located just off the Bruce Highway, has reopened to visitors after an extensive refurbishment aimed at enhancing accessibility and providing new amenities.
The project, which began in May 2023, is part of the Bundaberg Regional Council’s Parks & Open Space Strategy 2019-2026.
The refurbishment included significant upgrades such as site re-profiling, turfing, new pathways and shelter slabs, new playgrounds, park furniture, and barbecue facilities.
Mayor Helen Blackburn welcomed the changes and said the improvements were designed to ensure that the park was more inclusive and accessible to all visitors, including those with disabilities.
“Council has modified the area to connect the new playground, barbecues and picnic areas to the existing toilet facilities, making the entire site wheelchair-friendly,” she said.
“The playground has been designed with inclusivity in mind, featuring an all-abilities spinner and compliant picnic furniture and barbecues.
“This attention to detail ensures that all visitors, regardless of mobility, can enjoy the park’s new amenities.”
The project has also addressed several existing issues, including the site’s susceptibility to flooding.
To prevent future damage and protect the new features, a raised terrace with a sandstone retaining wall was constructed in the area.
Additionally, flood modelling and development approvals were secured to ensure that the enhancements would not exacerbate flooding impacts on surrounding properties or infrastructure like the Bruce Highway.
During the refurbishment, the park’s historical elements, such as the heritage windmill and memorial rock, were preserved in collaboration with the Isis District Historical Society.
Bundaberg Regional Council has also worked closely with arborists to protect the park’s ancient eucalypts, some of which are estimated to be several hundred years old.
Mayor Blackburn said the new park had something to offer everyone, including furry friends.
“Apple Tree Creek Community Park now also features a dog park, catering to dog lovers and providing a dedicated space for pets to play,” she said.
“We’re thrilled to offer a wonderfully developed recreational open space that caters to the traveling public, dog lovers, children of all ages, and large community groups.
“This park will serve as a vibrant hub for the community, bringing people together and providing a safe, enjoyable environment for all.”
The Bundaberg Regional Council invites the community to visit Apple Tree Creek Community Park and enjoy the new facilities and beautiful surroundings.
