With the need for its services and support greater than ever before The Salvation Army is launching its 60th Red Shield Appeal in Bundaberg this month.
Across Queensland, The Salvation Army are aiming to raise $5.7 million and $10,000 in Bundaberg for the Red Shield Appeal, which is now Australia’s largest and longest-running door-knock appeal.
The Salvation Army Bundaberg’s Captain Chris Millard said there was a high number of people needing assistance locally.
“In a lucky country like Australia, individuals and families shouldn’t have to make these sorts of decisions, like choosing whether to eat, pay rent or send your kids to the doctor,” he said.
“But these are the people the Salvos help every day as we try to give a new beginning to those struggling in our community.”
The Red Shield Appeal weekend is May 25 and 26, but there are many volunteering opportunities throughout the month of May – collections in shopping centres or other key locations, online fundraising or organising a collection at your workplace, school, or sporting event.
“Bundaberg needs your support more than ever,” Captain Chris said.
“The Salvos are grateful for the generosity we have received over the past 60 years of the Red Shield Appeal, and we hope to see our community come together again this year as we seek to make it another 60 years.”
Mayor encourages community to support appeal
Bundaberg Mayor Helen Blackburn said the Red Shield Appeal was not just about raising funds but also about restoring hope and dignity to those in need.
“The Bundaberg Salvation Army do a fantastic job and I urge our community to come together and support the Red Shield Appeal, as every contribution makes a meaningful difference,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“In times of adversity, the Bundaberg Red Shield Appeal stands as a beacon of compassion and solidarity, showcasing the true spirit of our community.
“It embodies our collective responsibility to uplift the vulnerable members of our community.”
All funds raised locally will remain in the local community, allowing The Salvation Army to meet the specific needs of the most disadvantaged and marginalised members of the Bundaberg Region.
Across Queensland last year, through The Salvation Army’s network of over 60 centres and 300 services in areas such as homelessness, family and domestic violence, youth, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, financial hardship and much more.
