NBN fibre upgrade milestone for Wide Bay

Local households can now connect to full fibre under a national nbn upgrade program.

More than 53,000 homes and businesses in the Wide Bay region, including Bundaberg, can now connect to full fibre under a national nbn upgrade program.

Households who experience slower speeds during peak periods, dropouts and low speed plans can see issues significantly reduced upon upgrade to fibre.

The upgrade in the Wide Bay region is part of a nationwide program that aims to provide faster services to more than 10 million premises across Australia by the end of 2025.

NBN Head of Customer Strategy and Innovation Dr Robert Joyce said the upgrades deliver a better and more reliable internet experience for homes and businesses.

“With the nbn network carrying more than 80 per cent of our country’s download data – and Australians consuming more of it than ever – the availability of full fibre for more homes across Australia has never been more important,” he said.

“The average household now has 22 connected devices and that’s growing year on year, we encourage customers to check with their internet provider to see if their plan has enough speed and data inclusions.”

President of Bundaberg and District Chamber of Commerce Tim Sayre said access to faster and more reliable speeds could transform how local businesses operate.

“These nbn fibre upgrades are a gamechanger for our local businesses here in Wide Bay and beyond, which is enabling faster speeds for improved efficiencies and more opportunities to expand innovation,” he said.

“Overall, it will help us to drive the economy both locally and on the global scale, and put us on a level playing field with our metro counterparts.”

Local resident Neil McPhillips said he recently upgrade his connection to nbn fibre.

“My connection has been faster and worked exceptionally well,” he said.

“The speeds were better than I expected which has made a huge difference in running my businesses from home.

“Faster speeds have been great for my kids and grandkids when they come and stay, especially when they are using all of their devices at the same time while working, streaming TV or playing games.”

Residents interested in upgrading to fibre can check their eligibility on the nbn website and contact their internet provider about available plans.

  1. Yep & we had 5G available for around half of our town 4 years ago through Telstra & Optus announced there building a 5G tower last year. 5G is already much faster then NBNs maximum speed currently available. NBN will have a 2GB/sec product soon but that is still only 1/5th the speed of 5G.

For home users that need unlimited downloads for streaming & gaming NBN is the clear choice but for Business users you should be getting 5G.
