A flood evacuation route, road upgrades and increased support for homelessness and housing are among the priorities that will be presented to the Queensland Government Community Cabinet on Wednesday.
Ahead of the Community Cabinet in Bundaberg Mayor Helen Blackburn has revealed Council’s wish list of local projects.
“Residents in our region expect to see all levels of government working hand-in-hand for the betterment of our community, and that’s why I’m excited by the opportunity to speak with State Government Ministers about our local priorities,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“High on that list is a flood evacuation route and upgraded roads, as well as more support to ease the homelessness and housing crisis.”
The Community Cabinet meeting comes just one week after Council resolved to accept ownership of the proposed Bundaberg East Flood Levee, provided the Queensland Government accepted all costs associated with its ongoing maintenance, ensuring this did not fall at the feet of ratepayers.
Bundaberg Regional Council Finance portfolio spokesperson Cr Deb Keslake said Councillors supported the resolution unanimously.
“Due to Council’s difficult financial situation, we have been working hard to identify sensible savings to avoid passing on a significant rates increase to local residents,” Cr Keslake said.
“This includes the ongoing costs associated with the flood levee.”
Mayor Blackburn said the arrival of the Community Cabinet in Bundaberg was an opportunity which would not be wasted and she looked forward to representing the region on issues important to residents.
“I will discuss with State Government Ministers flood plans which will not cut off or isolate areas in our community in the event of a major flood,” Mayor Blackburn said.
Also on the list of local priorities is the Paradise Dam rebuild and the construction of the new hospital.
“The security of our water supply and expansion of our local health services are vital to supporting our growing region.
“I’m looking forward to a collaborative Community Cabinet meeting and working with the State Government to advance our region,” Mayor Blackburn said.
The Bundaberg Community Cabinet will be held on Wednesday 15 May and will include a Town Hall style meeting.

How about you fix the princess and Scotland street intersection at the traffic lights East Bundaberg.
It is a disgrace
How about sealing more of our streets.
That’s a state road, Jeff. Call Main Roads Dept.
Hopefully Whalley Street will be completely sealed. The lack of bitumen, especially heading toward the shops when a car is coming frm the other direction is asking for an accident.
