Region greener as tree project comes to end

0

While the ambitious target may not have been reached, the Bundaberg Region is 265,213 trees greener as the One Million Trees project comes to an end.

The One Million Trees Program is no longer accepting expressions of interest for new trees, and the program will finish in June 2024.

The program was first launched in 2020 setting the target with a four-year goal.

Since then the community has dug deep in support of the project with individuals, businesses, schools and community groups all taking part in tree plantings.

Council was a major contributor to the program, giving the project tally a huge boost in recent months with the planting of more than 72,000 trees as part of the Washpool Creek naturalisation project alone.

Resident Voucher Program

For residents who have a One Million Trees Resident Voucher, vouchers for two free trees may be redeemed at the Bundaberg Landcare nursery up until 7 June 2024.

Landowner Program

For landowners who have submitted an expression of interest and are awaiting trees under the Landowner Program, Council will be in contact regarding outstanding orders, which must be fulfilled by 7 June 2024 (subject to availability).

One Million Trees project
One of the projects included was the Belle Eden waterway naturalisation.

For those landowners who are on the list to collect trees from the Bundaberg Landcare nursery, please collect these by 7 June 2024.

Note: For both programs above, tube stock supply is limited and will be available on a first come, first serve basis up until 7 June 2024 or when tube stock supply has been exhausted. Preferred species may be limited or unavailable.

Bundaberg Regional Council would like to thank everyone who participated in the One Million Trees project over recent years, including project partners TAFE Queensland, Bundaberg Landcare, Gidarjil Development Corporation and Gin Gin Landcare.

A special mention and thank you also goes to the community members who have undertaken planting and continued to care for native trees on public land and the more than 1200 landowners who received trees for planting on their property and committed to caring for them to ensure their success.

The plantings which took place under One Million Trees Bundaberg was a great community effort which will continue to benefit the Bundaberg Region well into the future.
