Magical Met Opera screenings at Moncrieff

Lovers of opera can experience all the magic of the Met Opera with recordings of live productions to be screened at the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre.

Met Opera screenings were taped at the live productions of the Metropolitan Opera 2023-24 season in New York.

Commencing in April, with the opera Carmen, there are five globally renowned screenings on show throughout the year for audiences to enjoy.

Carmen: Met Opera

Carmen tells the story of a woman who craves love but stirs obsession and jealousy.

The sweeping melodies are as irresistible as the title character herself, who has become a defining cultural figure.

The new modern staging by acclaimed English director Carrie Cracknell stars rising mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina in the title role.

A leading quartet of powerhouse stars features tenor Piotr Beczała as Don José, soprano Angel Blue as Micaëla, and bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen as the swaggering Escamillo.

Carmen is sung in French with English subtitles.

Romeo et Juliette: Met Opera

Based on the universally known William Shakespeare’s play, Charles Gounod’s sumptuous operatic adaptation of Romeo et Juliette, follows the tragic story of two star-crossed lovers from feuding families.

Featuring a stellar cast of soprano Nadine Sierra and tenor Benjamin Bernheim in the title roles, Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the romantic score.

Tony Award–winning director Bartlett Sher’s staging combines stunning scenic and costume designs to evoke scenes of late 18th-century Italy.

Roméo Et Juliette is sung in French with English subtitles.

La Forza del Destino: Met Opera

La Forza Del Destino tells the grand tale of ill-fated love, deadly vendettas, and family strife in a contemporary world.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the operatic score with Polish filmmaker-turned-opera director, Mariusz Treliński overseeing the Met’s first new production of Forza in nearly 30 years.

The extensive use of the Met’s turntable represents the unstoppable advance of destiny that drives the opera’s chain of calamitous events.

The distinguished cast showcases the talents of soprano sensation Lise Davidsen, tenor Brian Jagde, baritone Igor Golovatenko, mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk, bass-baritone Patrick Carfizzi and bass Soloman Howard.

La Forza Del Destino is sung in Italian with English subtitles.

Madama Butterfly: Met Opera

Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is one of the world’s most popular and tragic operas.

The timeless score tells the story of unrequited love between a young Japanese girl and an American naval officer.

Soprano Asmik Grigorian makes her highly anticipated Met debut as Cio-Cio-San, beside tenor Jonathan Tetelman as the callous American sailor Pinkerton.

Mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong stars as the steadfast maid Suzuki, and baritone Lucas Meachem as the American consul Sharpless.

The Met’s beloved production features traditional Bunraku puppetry and Japanese theatrical techniques to beautifully convey the story set in Nagasaki at the turn of the 20th century.

Madama Butterfly is sung in Italian with English subtitles.

La Rondine: Met Opera

Bittersweet love story, La Rondine follows the story of an elegant woman from high society and an idealistic young man who offers her an alternative to her life of excess.

Starring soprano Angel Blue as French courtesan Magda and tenor Jonathan Tetelman making his highly anticipated company debut as Ruggero.

Speranza Scappucci leads the score that combines the charm of Viennese operetta with the romance and heartbreak of Italian classics like La Bohème and La Traviata.

The rarely performed opera returns to the Met for the first time in more than a decade with Art Deco-inspired staging that transports the audience from the Parisian nightlife to a dreamy vision of 1920s French Riviera.

La Rondine is sung in Italian with English subtitles.
