Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) has taken over ownership of Camp Gregory Veterans Retreat to preserve the site’s conservation value.
Camp Gregory provides a place for veterans, first responders and their families to rest, relax and mix with like-minded people.
Founder and owner Roger Dwyer formally gifted the site to BMRG on 18 August, Vietnam Veterans Day.
BMRG board chair Tony Ricciardi said a committee would manage the 16 ha bush block to continue providing a safe place for veterans and first responders while preserving the natural environment.
“We’ll be maintaining the site as a retreat, as a quiet place for people to rest and recover,” Mr Ricciardi said.
“We’re also working closely with the Queensland Government to look at establishing a boat ramp and rehabilitating the riverbank.”
There was also a ceremony on Friday to mark the completion of upgrades at Camp Gregory, funded through a Queensland Remembers grant.
The works included improvements to hot water, water storage, the ablutions block and kitchen solar installation.
Vietnam Veterans Day was observed with a commemorative service and a luncheon afterwards.
