Wood carving and pyrography demonstrations will entertain the whole family as the Bundaberg Woodworkers Guild opens its doors to the community on Saturday.

Coinciding with the Bundaberg Pottery Group and Bundaberg Art Society, the Walker Street Craft Centre will be open for locals to be inspired by creative community members.

Bundaberg Woodworkers Guild president Bob Massie said he looked forward to showcasing the workings of the guild and hoped the open day would encourage new members to sign up.

“We will have live demonstrations including wood lathe and carvings and members will also be demonstrating how to use the scroll saws and pyrography – which is burning the wood to make a design or picture,” he said.

“This is a great opportunity for people to come and have a look around and see if they are interested in joining the guild.

“We currently have about 80 members with 20 to 30 active members.

“The more members we have the more often we can open throughout the week.

“Our members also get a lot of enjoyment from showcasing our work to the community and letting them see what we have to offer through open days like this.”

Bob joined Bundaberg Woodworkers Guild in 2015 and said he thoroughly enjoyed not only being creative, but also helping give back to the community when possible.

“We have raffles, which not only supports the guild to purchase equipment when needed, but it allows us to support other community groups such as LifeFlight,” he said.

“This is important to us, because the community comes to support us and so we like to help give back to the community too.”

The open day will also provide community members with the chance to buy a special handmade wooden gift or two, and enjoy a sausage sizzle.

“Our wood craft shop will be open too,” Bob said.

“The sky truly is the limit when it comes to what you can make when you are a member.

“So, there are plenty of unique items in our craft shop for people to purchase also.”
