The staff at Paradise Bakehouse in Moore Park Beach are celebrating after they scooped 10 gold awards in the Great Aussie Pie Competition.
Bringing home the champion title of best gourmet pie 2021 in Australia for their dancing scallop pie, along with the best gourmet poultry pie for their creamy chicken pie and the best gourmet game pie in Australia for their red curry crocodile pie, the team certainly have something to smile about.
After moving to the region from Western Australia and opening Paradise Bakehouse in Moore Park Beach earlier this year, owners Huyen Nguyen and Lam Khong have introduced some unique pies to the menu on advice from customers.
The unique flavours enjoyed by the community were also enjoyed by the national judges who awarded the bakery 14 medals in total in the annual pie competition.
Huyen said it was the first competition Paradise Bakehouse had entered, and they were gobsmacked by the results.
“We are so happy and couldn’t believe that – my husband was crying when he heard,” Huyen said.
“He was at home for a rest at that time, however he came straight to the shop to tell me the good news as it is the biggest pie competition.
“He held me up and gave me a kiss when he came to the shop.
“He loves baking so much, he always talks to me about pie and cake.”
The official Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition was established by John Ross and Craig Perry in 1989.
Their efforts and passion for pie excellence have helped to raise quality standards of pies across Australia, enhancing a sense of pride among bakers who specialise in pie making.
The judging panel consists of TAFE trainers, chefs, bakers and bakery reps who are all experts in their field.
Huyen said inspiration for the pie flavours came from feedback from the community, and without that, winning the national Great Aussie Pie Competition may not have been a possibility.
“All my recipes come from customers with their feedback and comments,” she said.
“I love dancing scallops pie and mushy pea pie, my husband love lamb pie, and crocodile, and scallops pie.”
