Wendy and Trevor receive OAM for food charity work

Wendy and Trevor Cross from Cross Family Farms have been recognised in The Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Bundaberg farming couple Wendy and Trevor Cross are two of the region’s OAM recipients, receiving The Queen’s Birthday Honours for their food charity work.

The humble duo operate Cross Family Farms and for many years have been donating produce to organisations including Meals on Wheels, Foodbank Queensland and Angels Community Group to help feed those in need.

Trevor said there were many reasons why he and Wendy had spent so much of their time and money donating their produce.

“There is nothing better in life than seeing people happy,” he said.

“We always like to help out and believe you should always do what you want someone to do for you and your family.”

Trevor said through Cross Family Farms, he and Wendy had donated $5.5 million worth of food over a period of eight years.

The duo are the sole reason the iconic Goomeri Pumpkin Festival went ahead in May in 2020 thanks to their donation of 1000 pumpkins for the event.

In 2019 Trevor and Wendy were commended for their efforts in helping Foodbank Queensland after they were named the highest supporter by kilogram in the whole of the state.

They were praised for their efforts in donating 887 tonnes of produce, or 1.5 million meals, to the charity organisation every year to help feed the needy.

Trevor said while he was happy to have received recognition through the OAM, the award was not about them.

“This is an award for all of the hardworking farmers out there,” he said.

“We might have been the ones to have received it, but they are the ones who deserve it.”

The Governor-General announced The Queen’s Birthday 2021 Honours List yesterday, recognising 1,190 Australians.

“On behalf of all Australians, congratulations to all recipients. Each of these individuals are unique and their story deserves to be shared widely and celebrated,” the Governor-General said.

“Collectively, they speak to who we are as a nation.

“There are countless examples of selflessness, commitment and dedication.”
