More than 15 students have joined join the Circus Skills Workshop, which rolled into the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre this week.

Hosted by Bundaberg Regional Council, the Circus Skills Workshop is one of many expressive events on offer during January for young people aged 8-18, with the program also including street art workshops, puppetry and stand-up comedy.

Off to a flying start, centre manager Rod Ainsworth said the Arts Summer School event would see participants learn acrobatics, tumbling, juggling, hula hoops, skipping and dance.

“We know there’s a great dance and acrobatics community in Bundaberg and wanted to offer a physical theatre workshop – so circus seemed like a perfect fit,” Rod said.

Running the show are circus trainers Alex Weckes-Huck and Lara Croydon from Cluster Arts, a Brisbane-based production house developing and producing circus acts that showcase Australian talent around the world.

Both Alex and Lara split their time between performing and regional teaching.

“We find that regional students are always enthusiastic and eager to learn, taking full advantage of the opportunity,” Alex said.

“I also came from a country town, so it’s really exciting for me to be the one performing now,” Lara said.

Participants will spend the rest of the week honing their new talents and creating a group performance, which they plan to wow crowds with when they take the stage at the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre later this week.

“There will be a free performance on Friday where the kids will demonstrate what they’ve learnt during the week,” Rod said.

Open to the public, Friday’s COVID Safe performance starts at 6pm.
