Reaching speeds of up to 75kmh, blokart drivers have been testing the sand at Woodgate Beach amid hopes to race a marathon next year.
South East Queensland Blokart Club president Len Holt said it was the second time competitors had gathered at Woodgate with their three-wheeled sailing machines and they were eager to stage a possible marathon next year.
“Woodgate is perfect for what we need,” Len said.
“There’s plenty of sand. and when we are racing we play for sheep stations!”
Len said when it comes to blokart racing on beaches it’s important to have a beach long enough to compete on for 2.5 hours, the equivalent of a 100km race.
“We race at Mackay and Yeppoon and now here at Woodgate Beach, although we find other places are too small for our serious marathons,” he said.
“At the moment we are here for our Christmas break up and just testing the waters, so to say.
“Racing is a very serious business, and we ensure we have all the right approvals and insurances to do so.
“We make sure we are not a nuisance and are courteous to others around.
“This weekend we have reached 75kmh but that’s not on a regular basis as we are careful of everyone around.”

Len said the blokarts would be back in action at Woodgate Beach on Sunday, 8 December for a few more hours of practice runs.
“With conditions like this it’s too good to pass up the chance to be out in the action,” he said.
“We have members from the Capricornia Blokart Club and the South East Queensland Club here at the moment.”
Visit Woodgate Beach committee member Marissa Greci said it was great to have the blokarters call in and the event had been very popular with locals.
“They first came here in October because we have a good stretch of beach for them and we are halfway between Yeppoon and Brisbane,” she said.
“The feedback was positive from their first trip and it’s good to have them back again.
“It’s great to have big groups come and stay in the region and anything that encourages people to come off the highway is a good thing.”
