The Bundaberg Region has welcomed Chinese New Year with community celebrations.

Drummers heralded the start of festivities while Mayor Jack Dempsey awakened the dragon.

Buss Park and sections of Bourbong Street have come alive with entertainment, colour and culture for Year of the Pig which represents luck, overall good fortune, wealth, honesty and general prosperity.

Earlier, there were Chinese food discovery tours and A Taste of China last night at the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre.

There’s “come and try” dragon boat racing as well.

Tonight there will be a Chinese cultural concert featuring performers from the Bundaberg Region’s sister city, Nanning.

A delegation of municipal, cultural and business visitors from Nanning is currently in Bundaberg.

Mayor Dempsey officially welcomed senior Chinese consular officials Chen Li and Chen Ying to the region today.
