The Rum City Foods International Street Criterium has wheeled into the CBD with 50 of the world’s top cyclists putting pedal to the metal in a street circuit race.
The criterium, which continues until 8pm, consists of several laps around the town centre with participants reaching speeds of up to 70kmh.
It kicks off eight days of jam-packed events, including the 70th edition of the Bundaberg International Cycling Spectacular to be raced at the Kevin Brogden Memorial Velodrome on Friday and Saturday.
Up to 100 events will fill the program with record crowds set to witness the “superstars of world cycling” take each other on.
On Sunday the Olympic Tri will begin, with some 500 competitors and 3500 plus spectators perfectly capping off the Auswide Bank Cycle Fest International.
Bundaberg Regional Council provided funding support of $30,000.
“The Cycle Fest International is now a part of the international cycling calendar of events and, in addition to attracting the best riders from throughout Australia, the event draws riders from overseas,” Mayor Dempsey said.
