Yarnbombing for Daffodil Day in Childers

Childers Neighbourhood Centre staff members are looking forward to the Yarnbombing for Daffodil Day event.

In a demonstration of hope community members are invited to take part in creating crocheted squares and woollen lengths for a yarnbombing event in Childers to show support for this year’s Daffodil Day.

Yarnbombing for Daffodil Day, organised by Childers Neighbourhood Centre, will be more than a visual spectacle, but an opportunity for the community to come together to raise awareness and support for those affected by cancer and their families.

Community Resilience and Connection portfolio spokesperson Cr Tracey McPhee said the community collaboration for this year’s Daffodil Day was a colourful way to wrap the region in support for cancer awareness.

“Community members who would like to contribute their creativity for a good cause are invited to take part in the Yarnbombing for Daffodil Day event at the Childers Neighbourhood Centre,” Cr McPhee said.

“Each week in the lead up to Daffodil Day residents are welcome to join in the fun by learning to knit or crochet by attending the Stitch and Chat event 9.30 am on Mondays at the Childers Neighbourhood Centre.

“These knitted and crocheted squares, or lengths, will support Daffodil Day in August.

Cr McPhee said these donations would then be sewn together by the wonderful Childers CWA ladies, before the wrapping of trees will take place on Thursday 22 August at 9.30 am.

“The aim of the project is to raise awareness of Daffodil Day and engage the whole of community in a collaborative project,” she said.

“The actual yarnbombing of the trees will happen on 22 August, however Childers Neighbourhood is accepting donations of knitted or crochet squares or lengths right up until Friday 16 August.

“There will also be a morning tea at the Neighbourhood Centre to say thank you to everyone involved in the project.

“The trees will stay wrapped for a week, weather permitting, before being removed.

“Then depending on condition of donated squares, they will be made into blankets to be given to community members in need.”
